Notes

Note
Hundreds of thousands of Irish immigrants came to this country during the dire potato famines in Ireland which occurred from 1845 to 1847. John Dean probably came to this country at that time as a young man approximately 22 or 23 years old. He would have joined thousands of others just like him in work for the railroads which were buildiing across the country. The Irish immigrants, among other nationalities, became the cheap labor force that built the railroads and stocked the steel and mining industries in the East. The US Censuses of 1860 and 1880 tend to confirm his birthdate within a 12 month period between 3 JUN 1823 and 2 JUN 1824. We also know that he was born in Ireland and family lore always said that Dublin was the place of his birth and education. Upon immigrating he must have gravitated to LaPorte, Indiana as a western hub of job-seekers. There he met and married a young nineteen year old colleen fresh off the boat from Ireland herself. We do not know if she had immigrated from Ireland alone or with her family. We have been unable to determine if either John or Catherine had relatives in Indiana. Catherine was only 19 years old and John was eleven years older.

After their marriage in La Porte, Indiana, John and Catherine Dean lived there long enough for their first child to be born 10 months later. Then sometime in late 1854 or early in 1855, they moved 75 miles west to LaSalle, Illinois in the north central part of the state. Some estimates claim that nearly 100,000 different men were recruited to work on the Illinois Central Railroad during its construction in the early 1850s. The mid 1850s had been a boom time for the building of railroads in the Midwest. We do not know for certain that John Dean worked for the Illinois Central but he was a lifelong railroad man, working on construction gangs and his move from Indiana to central Illinois is significant in that regard. We have located his family in three censuses in Illinois which place him in two different locations, both prominent hubs for Illinois Central railroad traffic.

Their remaining ten children were all born in Illinois and sometime between the 1870 and 1880 censuses, they moved to Joliet onto North Joliet Street. John worked for the railroad according to the census reports. The 1880 census for Joliet, Illinois indicates that the youngest 9 children were still living at home and Catherine's mother, Nora O'Neil, was living with them also. She was listed as 82 years of age and born in Ireland as were her parents. The two oldest sons, Thomas, age 25, and John, 24, apparently were working and living away. Son John died on October 10th of 1890 after the census was taken but we do not know from what cause.

Between 1880 and 1893 when John Dean died, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri and lived at 1212 Woodland avenue near the edge of town at that time but close to the railroad yards in the east bottoms. John was a section gang foreman on the railroad according to family remembrances and because of the location of where they lived, we assume that he worked for the Missouri Pacific RR in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Dean Family burial plot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo. contains the remains of John Dean ‎(#2)‎, Catherine O'Neill Dean ‎(#3)‎, Catherine Dean Murray Wintzen, ‎(#2E)‎, and great granddaughter Mary Eileen Ward ‎(#1E2)‎. Mary Bernadine Mendon Stanley, great-granddaughter, obtained information from the gravestones and from the Sexton of the Cemetery in 1984 as follows: John Dean - born June 1819; died October 1894. Katherine O'Neal Dean - born March 1834, died May 1920. Daughter - Katherine Dean Murray Wintzen, born November 1862, died February 1911. Section L - 255 - Lots #1 and #2. Lot #2 contains John Dean October 5, 1894. Lot #1 contains Katherine Dean, May 31, 1920 and Mary Eileen Ward, March 4, 1922. There was no record of which lot Katherine Wintzen was buried in but the Sexton thought it had to be #2.

There are a few inconsistencies in these Cemetery records. In all other records and in general family remembrances, the name had always been spelled the classical way - O'Neill. However, O'Neal and O'Neil are acceptable substitutes, but no one ever remembered Granny Dean spelling her name with a K rather than a C. It was always Catherine and is so in all other family records, as was Catherine Wintzen's. More importantly though, John Dean's date of birth is very likely incorrect as it does not agree with the census reports of 1870 and 1880 in Illinois. In 1870 his age was listed as 46 and in 1880 as 56. Catherine shows in 1870 as 36 and in 1880 as 45. Both of these census reports were enumerated in the month of June so Catherine would have been age 46 in 1880, but the ages for all of the children were correct. Since John's ages in the two census reports agree, it is highly likely that they were correct, or certainly nearly so. That would place his actual date of birth as somewhere between June 3, 1823 and June 2, 1824.

The explanation for these inconsistencies lies in the fact that when John died in 1893 Catherine purchased a lot at St Mary's Cemetery which was on the east side near Jackson Avenue. On January 6, 1920, just shortly before her own death in May of that year, she bought the present burial plot for $47. ‎(Deed #2002 in Mount St. Mary's Association, West 1/2 of Lot #255 in Section L)‎. She then had John's remains moved to the new Lot and ordered the marker. It seems logical and understandable that since it had been 26 years since John's death, and Granny Dean was 86 years old, that when she ordered the marker for the new gravesite she gave the stonecutter incorrect dates for John's birth and death and her daughter's date of birth which actually was 11-05-1863 according to the family Bible. Of course, there is another theory that one of the other children such as Aunt Mollie, Aunt Nan, or Aunt Maude gave the information to the stonecutter after Granny Dean had died. But Mary G. Ward seems to remember that it was Granny Dean, who lived with her, who ordered the marker. Incidentally it was Aunt Nan who supplied the information to the Coroner's office when Granny Dean died according to her Death Certificate except that her husband's name, Henry Walker, appears as the informant. Mary G. Ward, grand-daughter, buried her own daughter ‎(Mary Eileen)‎ in the Dean gravesite when she died in 1922.

Note
1865 Illinois State Census names only the Head of a Family. All members of that family are counted in age brackets as 10 and Under, 10 to 20, 30 to 40, 40 to 50, 50 to 60, 60 to 70, and 70 to 80. Each bracket then enumerates the number of Males and Females in that age bracket.

1870 US Census, Will County, Illinois

This US Census record is very difficult to read clearly. Both Ancestry.com and Family Search.org interpreted the Surname as DRAN instead of DEAN. We know, of course, this is an incorrect reading. The actual record was discovered by the Site Administrator by a page-by-page search of Will County records. All data is correct except for the Surname.

Note
Immigration:
We have located two possible immigration records into New York
which match fairly closely John Dean's age and Date of Birth.

John DEAN, 25 Mar 1848, age 25, New York, from Ireland via Liverpool, on board the ship Marmion.

John DEAN, 30 Oct 1849, Age 23, New York, from Ireland via Liverpool, on board the ship Gertrude.

We are accepting the 25 March 1848 record as the most probable one
for his immigration which indicates a Date of Birth no later than 25 March 1823.
