Notes

Note
We can assume that Catherine came to America with her parent‎(s)‎ sometime during the terrible potato famine in Ireland from 1845 to 1847. She would have been only about 12 years of age. We have not, as yet, been able to find traces of her family in or around LaPorte, Indiana but we are still looking. It is possible that she did not come to America until she was a grown woman. She was 19 when she married John Dean. If this is so, then we must ask the question, "What attracted her to an out-of-the-way place such as LaPorte, Indiana?"

Granny Dean lived with her daughter Gertrude the last 27 years of her life after John died in 1893. She had blonde, very curly hair and beautiful blue eyes. She stood only about 5'3" and was a little on the plump side. Her daughter Gertrude was often ill with generally poor health and with birthing another six children, had to spend a considerable amount of time in bed. Granny, therefore, took care of the house and tended the children most of the time. She did most of the cooking for the family and always made delicious bread.

Granny hated tea because it was thought of as "English". She talked of her home back in Ireland when she was a youngster just growing up but not much is remembered now by the family. She did tell stories of the fighting going on back there between the Irish and the "Orangemen". When her grand-daughter, Mary Gladys, was old enough to date, her future husband, Maurice Ward, came over to the house quite often. Usually he was accompanied by his friend Jack Dillon who came to see one of the neighbor girls, Alice Egan, who lived only a few blocks away and spent most of the time growing up with the Murray girls. So the four of them would visit and talk and swing on the porch in the evening and as 9 PM would near, Gertrude would begin to try and get Granny to go to bed. But Catherine would have none of it until "Mick" and "Jack" would sing her four or five old Irish songs. Then she would go off to bed quite satisfied. She was a favorite of all the boys who came a'courtin.
