Notes

Note
Nancy Crozier Ward, first born of Charles Rice Ward and Jane McCormack, was born in Audrain County, Missouri. She married Carter Blanton Dingle while still in her teens and a daughter, Frances Jane was born April 24, 1850. Her baby Nancy died in in fancy in 1857 and tragedy struck again on July 7, 1860 when her husband Carter died leaving her with five small children all under ten years of age. Carter had been 15 years her senior and was only 47 at his death.

Carter's younger brother, John Gibbons Dingle, age 42 then soon won Nancy's heart and agreed to take over the family duties as father to her children who were also his nieces and nephews. They were married after a respectable interval. The first of their four children, Albert Carter, was named after his late uncle. He provided a belated birthday present for Nancy by arranging to be born just two days after his mother's birthday, September 23, 1862.

The Civil War was raging throughout the new State of Missouri as elsewhere in the country. Brother was fighting against brother, neighbor against neighbor; and nowhere worse than in the border state of Missouri where slavery had been allowed in the Missouri Compromise of 1820. These were terrible times for one and all.

Three more children soon followed, but the youngest, Winder, died in infancy. Nancy spent a productive 30 years but sickened and died at the early age of 48.

The Dingles were farmers as were most of those early settlers of the mid-nineteenth century in Missouri. Some of the large family moved west to Kansas City in later years but we lost touch with them. According to the cited reference source below, Edward Dingle of Maryland settled in Scott County Kentucky where he married and sired seven children. Three of them, Richard, Winder and Julia settled in Marion County, Missouri. Two of his sons, Carter Blanton and John Gibbons became successive husbands to Nancy Crozier Ward. Edward moved his family to Audrain County in 1840, married a second time and fathered seven more children.

The oldest of this set of seven children, Samuel, was fatally involved in the very first "difficulty of any note occurring in the new town of Mexico, Missouri in Audrain County. In March of 1841, following a round of card playing in the local tavern, Samuel became involved in an argument with one James Hall. It continued until blows were struck and Hall drew his knife and stabbed Samuel Dingle in the chest several times. Samuel died as a result of his wounds. While being transferred to Boone County for trial, Hall escaped custody and was never found".

Ancestry.com has this census listed in Howard County. This is incorrect. The census record itself clearly states Audrain. But to eliminate confusion as to where the document is to be found I have listed the citation as Howard County.
