Notes

Note
As a young lad, Andrew took a job with the Kansas City, Missouri Public Transit Co. and became an operator on the street car line. He operated the very first cable car to traverse ‎(with passengers)‎ the old incline down the 9th street hill from Quality Hill across what is now Kersey Coates Drive down to the old Union Station in the bottoms near the stock yards. That cable car line has since been discontinued. Apparently, at that time, he lived in Kansas City, Missouri and was able to meet Gertrude there since she lived out at 12th and Jackson with her parents. She was only 18 when they married. After their marriage, they moved out to Rosedale, Kansas in Wyandotte County where their first three children were born. He had gone to work for the Santa Fe Railroad whose main yards were located in Argentine, Kansas near the Kaw ‎(Kansas)‎ River. Argentine, Kansas was famous for its big smelter on the east end of town. That smelter was used to smelt a goodly portion of the ores coming in from the west and southwest. In fact, the name "Argentine" was taken from the Latin word for silver, "argent".

By 1894, they had moved closer in and rented a house on Metropolitan avenue near the steel plant. The next three children were born in a house at 33rd and Powell in Argentine and then on November 01, 1902, Andrew was able to buy the grand old house at 1315 South 39th Street in Argentine.

The house was 20 years old then but was in good condition standing on a slight rise above the Kaw River out at the edge of town. When the great flood of 1903 came, it was to this grand house that many families fled to escape the rising waters. The flood came just to the edge of the property on the north side about one block away from the house. There must have been 50 or more people staying there during the days before the waters receded. They all had to be fed and cared for, but everyone chipped in. Others brought blankets, food and clothing and all was shared. This grand old house was retained in the family for many years before it was finally sold in the mid-1930's. In the vacant land alongside the house on the north, Andrew planted and tended a goodly sized garden. In addition, there were blackberry bushes with plenty of fruit for pies. At the back was a two-story barn situated behind enormous oak trees. The entire property exceeded 1 to 1 1/2 acres. At this writing, it is still standing and occupied although it has been remodeled many times since.

Andrew's daughter Catherine Murray Cole wrote a letter to this administrator in 1990 concerning a friend of hers living in Argentine, Kansas, "Dutch" Carter, age 92 then, who personally knew her father Andrew Murray when he worked with the Santa Fe Railroad. Mr. Carter showed her a workplace diary which he had kept "..listing Engineers, Firemen, Brakemen, Conductors, etc. with the Santa Fe and the day they started on their particular jobs and it showed that Andy Murray made his first trip as an Engineer on September 15, 1892." The little book had gone through the flood in 1903 and was all water marked and yelllow with age and you could hardly touch it as it was so brittle. Mr. Carter had written in pencil when certain ones had died or were fired or were killed. She couldn't believe that he had known her Dad as it seemed so long ago but he was 92 then and said he remembered him well and how everybody liked and respected Andy Murray.

Andrew's engineering runs on the Santa Fe usually took him west from Kansas City through Topeka and out to Manhattan and Salina, Kansas. He would stay the night and return the next day tooting his whistle with a special code as he entered the yards just below the house. Gertrude knew just when he would come in the house and would always have dinner ready.

Andy was about 5'8" tall and had jet black hair. He had always worn a big bushy mustache and his eyelashes and eye brows had to be trimmed at the same time as the mustache. After his death, the mortician shaved his mustache clean for the burial. The family was furious! He worked on the railroad until age 72, two years past normal returement. He had always said that when he retired it would be time for him to die. He was prophetic because he lived only another year and died at age 73. His death was caused by a heart attack with death occurring on Good Friday. When he was stricken and in bed at home, old Dr. Klopper from Argentine came to minister to him. As he entered the room he was heard to say, "Well, Andy, what's the problem? You've known for two years that you had heart trouble." That was the first time Gertrude ever knew about it. He had kept it a secret for the last two years of his life. That was his style however, ...not very talkative, quiet and prone to keep things to himself; but with a real temper when finally aroused.
