They had - William, Charles R., Matilda and Nancy. Mr. Word removed to Missouri in 1817, and settled in Callaway County. William, his eldest son, married Polly Rives, who after an affliction of seven years, went entirely blind. Charles R., now living, was a celebrated auger maker in his younger days. In transcribing this excerpt I made every effort to type it exactly as the book has it. So yes, the book has the name as Word rather than Ward.
Many of the biographies and stories in this book were gathered by Bryan and Rose during interviews with locals and various family members who were alive during the writing of the book. Therefore the information is basically anecdotal and questionable as a source. But it does give us some leads into where to look for information and it's a great read.

William Rice Ward's Obituary

William Rice Ward was grandson to this John Ward, and brother to Charles Rice Ward, at his death a sizable obituary was placed in the "Sedalia Weekly Bazoo" stating that Wm. had once said all of his ancestors lived to ripe old ages including his grandfather who lived to 110 years.

We know Lucy Rice's father, Charles Rice, died according to the probate of his will in 1785. But the birthdate we have for him is questionable.
We believe at this time that John Ward was the paternal grandfather of William Rice Ward . We have very little information on him and lack any real dates for his birth and death.
Because we lack information ‎(and if William is correct that his grandfather lived to 110 years of age)‎ we do not know which grandfather he refers to.
