Notes

Note
Ellen Jane Hendrix was a superb knitter. She created her own designs and could knit anything. She made bedspreads in an intricate floral pattern for each of her children. Each spread incorporated the full name, date and place of birth around the skirt of the spread. She also made three other bedspreads that had each of her twelve children's full name and date of birth listed from top to bottom across the face of it. These three spreads were given to her sons David and Howard and one to her daughter Vera. Vera's is since lost, but Howard's is now owned by his granddaughter ‎(private)‎ and David's was inherited by his daughter ‎(private)‎ who gave it to me in 1990 and I have now passed it on to my daughter, ‎(private)‎. David Lawrence and his mother Nellie's personal spread and my father's personal spread is now owned by my son, ‎(private)‎. I also have a good clear photograph of the family spread owned by Howard Ward, Jr. Ellen Jane entered one of the spreads plus the one for her son Maurice in the Kansas State Fair at Topeka, Kansas one year. She was awarded a first and second prize for the two spreads but became irate when the indivi- dual spread was given the first place over the much more difficult full family spread. She vowed never to enter another because the judging was totally without merit. She never did again. She knitted hundreds of beautiful pieces through the many years of her life. Her granddaughter, ‎(private)‎ has a buffet runner with the entire Lord's Prayer knitted into it. It is exquisite! Her daughter Nellie handed down the information that Ellen Jane even knitted covers for the stumps of missing limbs of the amputees from the Civil War. For the benefit of the knitters who will appreciate this bit of information, all of her knitting was done on double pointed needles made of steel. She nearly always used thin fine quality thread.

I can barely remember her when I was a child. She sat in our living room by the hour. I was old enough to walk and would hang on the arm of the chair and stand on the rocker and wait for my "candy treat". The "treat" was actually a menthol cough drop. She always carried a supply in her apron pocket. I love them to this day. She lived with us during the last few years of her life and thought that my older brother, Maurice Andrew Ward, was the only child my parents should have. When Mary Eileen died in infancy from pneumonia, Grandmother expressed her opinion that there should be no more children. I suppose because she had 12 children that she had great sympathy for my mother. When I was born in 1924 she tried her best not to like me or ever appear to welcome me into the family, according to my mother. She softened eventually however.

Grandmother Ellen Jane would pass herself around to her children by visiting them for short periods of time. She would go to visit Howard out in the suburbs near Raytown, Missouri, then out to Ray's house in Independence or over to Vera's in Kansas City, Kansas. A few times she would take a long train ride out to Eagle Rock, California to visit her son David and his family. However she always complained California was too cold for her.

It is believed that Ellen Jane attended Audrain Christian Seminary in Mexico, Missouri shortly after it opened in 1858. I have a copy of an essay entitled "The Nice Young Man Irony" which states that it was composed and read by, Ellen J. Hendrix at the Audrain Christian Seminary in Mexico, Missouri on July of 1860. She was only 15 years old then. The Seminary was opened in 1858 and merged into Hardin College in 1872. When I corresponded with the college, they were unable to find a record of her attendance there.

She was a prolific writer and corresponded regularly with her sister-in-law Elizabeth Jane Ward Orr. She also kept up a running correspondence with her own sister Lillie who was blind and lived in Mexico, Missouri. Lillie wrote excellent poetry some of which was published locally. A volume of her poems is in the Museum Library in Mexico, Missouri. Grandson David Lawrence had an analysis made in 1985 of Ellen Jane's handwriting which was taken from several samples contained in numerous letters to her husband-to-be and from other writings in their "book", a volume of poems, letters and comments entered by the two of them throughout their lives plus many short notes from various friends of theirs. The analysis indicates an exceptionally high intelligence level, very capable, competent with great powers of concentration. She really was a great personality!

On August 1st of 1926 her daughter and son-in-law Vera and Archie Mapes came over to our house to take her for a drive. Upon returning she said she didn't feel well and had a pain in her left side. My mother and Archie took her into her bedroom to lie down and then Archie went to the neighbor's to fetch a doctor. Grandmother asked for help in removing her teeth and then simply went to sleep in a peaceful manner. I was sent across the street for help from a neighbor woman who came swiftly with some spirits but it was too late. She had died at 7:15P.M. Grandmother was 81 years old. She had experienced some heart trouble in the past few years so it came as no surprise. Archie returned in a few minutes with a doctor who examined her and said that "she had just reached the end of her rope". Her death certificate states that the cause of death was chronic myocarditis contributed to by chronic arterio-sclerosis. My sister was born just 26 days later and named Ellen Jane.

Text: This digital photo is a part of a 12 photo framed set. The photos were taken circa 1900. The original framed set was in the posession of Maurice V. Ward and his wife Mary G. Ward. The set was passed from them to their son William E.‎(Bill)‎ Ward sometime after his father's death and before his mother's. Bill Ward then passed them onto his eldest son. What I have in my collection are digital photo's of the original set.
