Notes

Note
Mary Holman was born into one of the founding families of Goochland County, Virginia. We now know that her father was John Holman and her mother's name was Elizabeth or "Betsy". Her brother was James Holman who married Miss Jane Heath and was later appointed a Captain in the Virginia Militia and fought in the Revolutionary War. Mary lived on long after her husband, Charles Rice, died and continued to pay taxes on her farm until the spring of 1802, which would indicate her death took place after April of 1801, when her name appears on the tax rolls, and the following year. She and Charles Rice were slave owners and the names of Pompey, Hannah, Tommy, Sue, Nan, Greg, and Peter were some of the names mentioned on the tax rolls. They raised as many as 15 head of cattle and 4 or 5 horses during the late 18th century. Thomas Jefferson was one of their neighbors at that time. He is listed on the tax rolls as Esq. ‎(Esquire)‎ which usually meant Attorney. We have estimated Mary's date of birth from the proven date of her marriage.
