BIO

William Hendrix was born in Oldham County, Kentucky near the town of Westport on the south bank of the Ohio River in the year 1804.

According to the Oldham County, Kentucky Court Records, a deed dated December 23, 1825 and recorded June 19, 1826 states that Rudy Hendrix and his wife, Jemima, sold " ... a certain lot or parcel of land, lying and being in the town of Westport in said ‎(Oldham)‎ County, and being part of said town, and known on the plat of said town by the number one hundred and seventy seven, " to a John Varble for the sum of $40. According to the town plat, this lot is on the southwest corner of Second Street and Jefferson Street.

Another deed is dated January 9, 1828 and for $100, William bought his father's homestead, some 72 acres as follows: ... on the waters of Eighteen Mile Creek and being the same tract of land on which the said Rudy Hendrix now lives ... and adjoining the lands of... etc, "; also the following personal property to wit, " one black mare and black horse colt; one bay mare and a roan filly; five head of horned cattle, thirty head of hogs, and all my household and kitchen furniture and farming utensils."

This farm was the home of Rudy James Hendrix and his wife Jemima Button Hendrix. Just one year later, on January 30, 1829, Rudy Hendrix, Jemima, and their son William Hendrix sold the same 72 acres to a Peter Wykoff in consideration of $400. But this time only the land changed hands.

William and Judith Ann Hendrix enjoyed eleven children from their marriage. According to the records of Nellie Ward Lobdell, the first four were supposedly born in or near Westport, Kentucky which would have placed them in that state at least until 1838, nine years after they sold their farm to Peter Wykoff. After William and Judith Ann had moved to Audrain County, Missouri, William continued farming and became Sheriff in later years. His son James was deputy during the 1850's. The two of them went to California in 1850 along with many prospectors from Audrain County. James was only 19 years old at the time and they left behind eight other children ranging in age from 17 down to 1. The two of them returned to Audrain County the following year in 1851 without having struck gold.

William was reputed to be an excellent stock raiser and farmer as well as a brick mason. He was able to get work setting brick quite often in the newly-building towns of Eastern Missouri.

The 1840 Census for Callaway County, Missouri places the family there. William was 35 and his wife Judith only 25. There were two children between 5 and 10, and two more under the age of 5. Also there was another young male living with them who was between 20 and 30 years of age, and William owned 2 slaves. He was a farmer at that time. He apparently had moved his family west to Missouri between 1837 after William was born and 1840 at the time of that Census.

This transcription is from a xerox copy of a document from the personal collection of William E. Ward. He did much of his research at the LDS library, it is a copy of a copy they have in their posession on microfilm. We will have to research Oldham County records to verify this document. This document fully displays the actual signatures and writing of Maryann Bourn, and the signatures of William Hendrix, William Bourn, and Elizabeth Bourn.

Please note with the old style of writing how it is EASY to mistake the signatures as Bowen instead of Bourn, could be the reason we find items so often that people have transcribed and listed known Bourn family members under the name Bowen. Also note when Maryann signs her name she has a slight separation between Mary and ann but the A is lower case. The Clerk however writes her name as two separate words and places a capital A at the beginning of Ann. I think the lady's name by her own handwriting on a legal document is Maryann, one word, an “Americanized” version of her french grandmother's name Marianne.

These are family members from Audrain County, who sought their fortunes in the gold fields, and are on this same census page. They match the names of the men listed in the article, "California Emmigrants" It is interesting to note that these men were all listed twice on the 1850 census, once in their hometowns and again in California.

OBITUARY

Obituary
Departed this life Dec. 15th, 1873,
of pneumonia. William Hendrix, in
his 69th year. Mr. Hendrix through
life maintained an unblemished
character. And if all those nobler
virtues that cluster around a devot-
ed husband and affectionate father
and a true Christian entitle one to
the society of the redeemed in Heav-
en, the subject of this obituary
must surely wear a rich crown in
Paradise above. Widow and chil-
dren, we know from sad experience
your present trials. You have the
sympathy of friends but they will
afford you but little consolation.
The journey of life will soon be
over.
So dry up your tears and remem-
ber your present afflictions and be-
reavements will soon pass away.
Death is the gate-way to either
shore. While some are passing
over the river, others are approach-
ing the waters edge. And we too
will soon have lost the race or won
the crown. Some of you by reason
of absence and one, though present,
for want of sight, could not even
for the last time look upon the face
of a dying father. Remember you
will not always be blind. Those
eyes now insensible to the bright-
est sunlight will yet, not only in
Heaven behold a fathers face, but
the glorious face of a worlds Re-
deemer,
“Let not your heart be troubled
ye believe in God, believe -----
me.”
