Notes

Note
In the WEW Manuscript, Nellie Ward Lobdell's notes has James with a middle initial of "R". His will has him with no middle initial.

Note
James was born in Ireland possibly of the Irish noble families. He told his children that he ran away from his ancestral home after their father died. The basis for this story lies in the notes of his granddaughter Elizabeth Ward who corresponded regularly with her niece Nellie Ward Lobdell. Elizabeth's father Charles Rice Ward had given her all of his papers and records but they were subsequently lost in a fire. She was relating from her memory. James' older brother later wrote to him in America requesting his return to Ireland but James declined. We must assume that James had first written to his brother sending his address in America. -WEW
