Notes

Note
James David and his father William went to California in 1850 in answer to "the gold fever". Apparently they were unsuccessful as they both returned within a year. When his father took over the job of Sheriff of Audrain County, Missouri, James became his Deputy. During the Civil War, James served in the Confederate Army under General Sterling Price for six months. He was in the "Battle of Wilson Creek"*** August 10, 1861. He was taken prisoner by Union troops on August 6, 1862 and "made to run 8 miles on foot". He is quoted in his personal notes as saying, "My great-grandfather ‎(William Hendrix)‎ served under Washington during the Revolutionary War." His notes also claimed that the Hendrix family first settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

***The Battle of Wilson's Creek ‎(called Oak Hills by the Southerners)‎ was fought ten miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri on August 10, 1861 and was a confederate victory. The Battle marked the beginning of the Civil War in Missouri. For the next three and a half years, the state was the scene of savage and fierce fighting, mostly guerrilla warfare, with small bands of mounted raiders destroying anything military or civilian that could aid the enemy. By the time the conflict ended in the spring of 1865, Missouri had witnessed so many battles and skirmishes that it ranks as the third most fought-over state in the nation. -Jane

These and many other men from Audrain County, who sought their fortunes in the gold fields, are on this same census page. They match the names of the men listed in the article, "California Emmigrants" ‎(See image below in MEDIA section.)‎ It is interesting to note that these men were all listed twice on the 1850 census, once in their hometowns and again in California.
