Notes

Note
Lawrence Mitchell Hendrix was raised on his father's farm. Later he became overseer for Audrain County. He had received his education principally in Mexico, Missouri. " Although brought up on a farm, he had a marked natural inclination for mecha nical pursuits, and when still a young man, learned the blacksmith's trade, which he has since followed with little or no interruption. A man of more than ordinary intelligence and of superior mechanical skill, years of experience at the blacksmi th's trade have made him one of the best blacksmiths in the County. He has a good shop and commands a large and steadily increasing custom. Mr. Hendrix has been road overseer in this County and has made an enviable reputation by the efficient and thorough manner in which he discharges the duties of his office. He and his wife are members of the Christian Church and he is a member of the Anti-Horse Thief Association. " Quoted from the "History of Audrain County, Missouri -1884; page 607.

Note
CIVIL WAR

An F. M. Hendrix signed the Oath of Allegiance 3 October 1862 in Audrain County, Missouri. The previous day L. M. Hendrix also signed the Oath in Audrain. It is quite likely these men were the then 27 year old Francis Merit and 21 year old Lawrence Mitchell, sons of William Hendrix. Having signed the oath is usually an indication of Confederate actions or sympathies.
