Note
Lily Elizabeth Graves Hendrix, the youngest child of William Hendrix and Judith Anne Bourn, although blind, was well educated as were all of the children. Lily was an accomplished poet and author who wrote several books. One of her books of poems i s in the Audrain County Museum Library at Mexico, Missouri. Lily was a favorite of Ellen Jane's and they wrote to each other many times through the years. She contributed some of her poetry to Ellen Jane's "book" after David had died. We believe th at she also attended the Audrain Christian Seminary in Mexico, Missouri for the better part of her education, although the present day Hardin College has been unable to locate any official record of that. The names of some of the children of this f amily are family names out of the past; e. g. West, Bourne, Lawrence, Graves, Lowen, Gray. Even the name Whitley honors the wife ‎(Levisa Whitley)‎ of Judith Anne's brother, Major James McKinney.

Note
On February 29, 1876 Dr. John T. Sibley, superintendent of the Missouri School for
the Blind, delivered an address in the hall of the House of Representatives
at Jefferson City, Mo. During his address he discussed how “The Missouri School for the Blind”
Is often mistaken for an asylum. He defended its standing as an educational institution. In his address he read a poem from a book written by, Lily Hendrix, a student who had graduated only a few years before.

My World

You tell me I am blind, but, ah!
You know not what you say;
You little know the glorious things
That I behold each day.
There is a world I call my own,
All radiant with light!
A land as different from yours
As morning is from night. "

Each morn I ope my weary eyes
Upon your world of gloom;
Its chill and darkness only give
A warning of the tomb;
I linger but a moment there,
And then I turn and hie
To that fair realm all lighted up
With hope of by-and-by.

Perhaps your world is not so dark
As it has seemed to me;
Perhaps that is the reason why
You think I cannot see.
You cannot know the rays that light
This inner world of mine,
Or you would never pity me
And say that I am blind.

A story was passed down through the family about how we had a blind relative who could “see” colours with her hands. She could reach into the knitting basket and pull out a requested colour. There is no doubt in my mind that this was Lily and that she could “see” the colours. In this same passage Dr. Sibley says the following;

“You will often see a blind girl with several balls of yarn in her pocket, from which she is knitting or crocheting a piece of fancy work; but she knows the difference in the colors of the several balls by the manner in which they are wound or by the character of the dye, some dyes being harsh and others soft. “

Nothing psychic was going on, Lily had developed a fine sense of touch enabling her to feel the manner they were wound and/or the different textures the dye imparted to the various coloured yarn. -Jane
