Notes

Note
John's middle or possibly first name may have been Valentine. -WEW manuscript

UPDATE - 16 November 2007
The document we had for a John Wood signed by Valentine Wood county clerk cannot be the John Wood we seek. Evidence used to negate the possibility is the book "Albemarle County in Virginia: Giving Some Account of what it was by Nature..." By Edga r Woods See pages 347 - 351.
This book does however give a very interesting account of a William Wood on page 351. This William Wood arrived in 1779 from Maryland. He settled on the west fork of Priddys Creek and became the ancestor to nearly all Wood families in the norther n part of Albemarle County. Around the same time as William's arrival, several other Marylander's settled in the same neighborhood and in a few years four more Marylander's arrived and settled in the same neighborhood, including one, JOHN WARD. This definitely warrants more research. -Jane

Note
We do not at this time know the dates of birth for John's 3 children, nor do we know the date or circumstances of his death or how soon after Lucy remarried. We do know Lucy Rice was married a second time to John Ward on June 1, 1797.
Therefore I have listed Johns death date as before June 1, 1797 and the children's birth dates as before 1798.
‎( This covers the possibility of one of them having been born posthumously.)‎
